Yasir Jaswal Joins Call The Band

Yasir Jaswal

Yasir Jaswal, the former lead vocalist of an Islamabad based ‘Irtaash‘ has now joined Call The Band. Mr Jaswal’s inclusion in the band means that Call has now got a new vocalist after they announced the exit of earlier lead vocalist Junaid Khan almost a year back.

Yasir Jaswal (2)
Since then Call have been performing live with Mustafa Zahid (Roxen) as their lead vocalist on interim basis. Yesterday the official fan page of Call released a photo of Yasir Jaswal, welcoming him to the band and promising a lot more music from their side. Also attached was a message from the founder of the band, Xulfi, He stated:
“Just performed at Pakistan Sports Festival in Islamabad at Jinnah Stadium. Huge crowd, Great fun! Yasir Jaswal you rocked man. This was the first of many future Call shows with new lineup. Call is back guys, heavier than ever.”
On the whole, people are really praising this new entry to the band and decision made by Xulfi to introduce a new voice in the band. Yasir Jaswal is a known musician from Islamabad who started his career almost 10 years back. He is also into film making and has direct couple of good videos. Also interestingly he is the brother of Umair Jaswal (Qayaas) and Uzair Jaswal, both of them already in the music industry and performed at the last season of Coke Studio.
But the good thing is that with the inclusion of Yasir Jaswal as the lead vocalist, it is most expected that Call will go back and once again discover its roots. And this will surely be good news for the true and hardcore Call fans as we hope to listen a lot more ‘Shayads’ and ‘Pukaars’.
Now this remains to be seen that how soon Call comes up with a new video or single to formally introduce the new vocalist to their fans.
We wish the new line up of Call the very best of luck for their future projects and we hope that they can once again provide us with some amazing tunes. Cheers!

First person: Hotstepper alert (DAWN NEWS)

Shoulders set, back ramrod straight, balancing perfectly on a pair of high wedges, there’s something about Amna Ilyas that makes you swivel your head towards her and ask, “Who’s that girl?” She certainly knows how to walk the catwalk, carrying off anything from an ornate bridal dress to casual pret with an easy grace. She’s also a current favourite with fashion designers, featured in a myriad different fashion shoots, a dusky, sultry-eyed wisp of a girl who stares out at you from absolutely every glossy in the country.

There are so many things that make Amna stand out amongst the burgeoning milieu of models that surround her. For one, she’s 5 feet 8 inches tall — not exactly statuesque by international standards but at least taller than most Pakistani models. She’s also extremely thin and is utterly at ease in high heels; thus fulfilling some of the veritable prerequisites required of models. Furthermore, in a sea of painted pink and white faces, Amna’s dark skin is her most distinguishable feature. That, and her face, which is yet to have gone under the knife for any corrective procedure. This is quite a rarity in an industry where the odd nip, tuck, injections or, as models prefer to address it, ‘accident’, has become the order of the day.
“I would probably consider cosmetic surgery if I developed premature wrinkles. For now, though, I am more comfortable without it,” she professes. “I think that an individual should be able to carry his or her natural features confidently rather than have them rectified to the point of risking skin damage and looking disfigured.”
It’s no wonder then that she admires Iraj Manzoor, Pakistan’s original catwalk siren, who has always vocally spoken against cosmetic surgery. “That’s the kind of attitude a model should have,” points out Amna. “Iraj eats healthy and works out which is why she can still walk the catwalk at the age of 40.”
But like Iraj, does Amna also want to be a model till a ripe old age? “No, I think I’d like to retire by my late 20s,” she says. “That’s how it’s done internationally and besides, there are so many other things than a woman can do.”
For now, though, she’s more than happy with her skyrocketing career. “It was easy for me to step into modeling,” she recalls. “I was 16 years old when family friend, photographer and stylist Akif Ilyas photographed me and introduced me to the field. My two elder sisters had already been models so my family was open to the idea. For the first six months, I just learnt the ropes with Akif and then, I began to take up more work.”
Modeling 101
However, while stepping into the field may have been easy, life as a new model couldn’t possibly have been a walk in the park. The business of beauty, bright lights and high fashion is rife with a backlog of manipulation and favoritism. And all a young model can do is bide her time by the sharks — until she becomes one herself.
“I remember how older, experienced models would gossip about me right in front of me. They didn’t care that I was right there. I have never let such things bother me. Nor have I ever tried to be part of the usual fights to wear the showstopper outfit or for the finale of the show.”
“Most young models aren’t initially manipulative at all. It’s just that they are put under so much stress by the older models that they decide that there’s no other way to survive in this field,” points out Amna.
Did this pressure also metamorphose her into a ‘mean girl’? “No and it’s probably because I kept to myself,” she says. “I was busy balancing my studies with modeling during the early years. I’d sit in a corner with my books while waiting backstage. I was too busy studying to have the time for petty politics and catfights.”
Still, she remembers the painfully long hours she’d have to wait backstage as a fledgling model. “We’d be asked to come in at 10am for a show that would begin at 9pm. They wanted to get done with our hair and make-up beforehand. The veteran models were allowed the luxury to come by late evening. It was such an unnecessary waste of time especially since make-up teams could have simply been divided and have us all ready in the evening. It was just an exhausting ordeal that all new models had to — and still have to — endure.”
And yet, Amna persisted along the arduous path to super model-dom. “No matter what, it’s fun,” she smiles. “It also comes naturally to me. Back when I was in college it was a great way to earn some extra money and everybody just thought I was ‘cool’. Later on, it just became an inevitable career choice.”
Hotstepper for fashion
Five years later, Amna’s one of the ‘veterans’ now with a Lux Style Award (LSA) nomination for emerging talent from 2011 to her credit. Had she expected to win — and did it feel bad when she didn’t? “I had a feeling I wouldn’t win,” she confesses. “That doesn’t mean that I didn’t feel bad when I didn’t. Of course, I’d love to win an LSA but for now, it isn’t my one and only goal. There are so many other things that I’m looking forward to.”

One of these is the release of her film, the Sabiha Sumar-directed Good Morning Karachi (earlier titled Rafina) and Zinda Bhaag. “Acting was an interesting experience and I wouldn’t mind pursuing a career in it,” she says. “With modeling, the most I can do is strike a dramatic pose. With acting, I can emote and speak rather than just strike a pose.”
With modeling, a career high is working with a range of talented stylists and photographers. Some of her favorites include the duos of Nadir Firoz-Maha Burney and Ayaz Anis-Rana Khan. Getting to wear gorgeous designer wear is another plus. Some of her recent work has been for designers Shehla Chatoor, Sonya Battla and Sanam Chaudhri for Bonanza and Daaman.“It was such fun being part of the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week (PSFW),” she speaks of her recent fashion week experience. “The designer line-up was fabulous and HSY as a choreographer has a positive energy that is infectious. He’d always be joking around, giving us pep talks and making sure he put out a grand show.”
It’s the growing chasm between the fashion weeks of Karachi and Lahore that is new becoming all too pronounced. Amna was also part of Karachi’s Fashion Pakistan Week (FPW) which she describes as ‘exhausting’. “There were 14 shows packed in each day when normally there are four to five,” she explains. “Also, usually models get divided between alternate shows but at FPW, there were too few of us. We had to be in every showcase.”
However, she compensates that the good thing about fashion weeks by credible councils is that models always get paid — as opposed to dicey events where models have famously had to fight for their dues, which magically get ignored once the show is over. “It’s not easy being a model,” she reveals. “There are so many society taboos attached to the field and plenty of seedy characters trying to cheat you out of your money. Fortunately, I’ve always been very forthright about being treated fairly. I once had to fight with a certain organiser, even threaten him, until he accepted that he owed me money.
“I’ve never fought, though, over what outfit I have to wear at a show. I wear whatever the designer has set aside for me and somehow it always gets noticed,” she laughs.
And it’s all because whatever Amna wears, she makes sure she wears it well. That’s the true mark of a great model.

Arab Idol champ in Gaza, urges Palestinian unity

( DAWN NEWS) KHAN YOUNIS REFUGEE CAMP, Gaza Strip: Palestinians have a new voice: a 23-year-old wedding singer from a Gaza refugee camp touted as a rare symbol of national unity after he won the Arab world's top TV contest.

But Mohammed Assaf's homecoming Tuesday highlighted the harsh reality of political divisions between the Islamic militants who rule Gaza and the Palestinian president in the West Bank.
Even as thousands thronged the streets in a frenzied welcome for the newly crowned winner of "Arab Idol," Hamas stayed away, unable to reconcile the young crooner's triumph in the world of glitzy entertainment with their religious beliefs.
In contrast, Hamas' main rival, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, portrayed the singer's victory as an achievement for all Palestinians, apparently hoping Assaf's popularity would rub off on him.
The singer with the silky voice and warm smile had put Palestinian pride center stage throughout the competition, bringing many in the audience to their feet when he struck up his signature anthem to Palestinian nationalism, "Raise the Kaffiyeh."
Street celebrations and fireworks erupted across the West Bank and Gaza after he was named the winner Saturday at a TV studio in Beirut.
On Tuesday, Assaf revisited the theme of unity.
"My message is national unity and ending the split," he told a news conference at the border crossing between Egypt and Gaza. "We are one people, and we want our freedom."
Still, the thousands of fans waiting for him in scorching heat waved Palestinian flags and the yellow banners of Abbas' Fatah movement, not the green flags of Hamas.
Assaf, who grew up in Gaza's Khan Younis refugee camp, almost didn't get to compete. He had to plead with Hamas to let him leave Gaza, he said, then bribe Egyptian border guards to let him enter the country en route to Lebanon. A fellow Palestinian gave up his slot during the audition phase because he believed Assaf had a better chance at winning.
As Assaf advanced in the competition, however, excitement and national pride built in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the territories where the Palestinians hope to one day establish a state. Rooting for the talented performer allowed Palestinians to feel as one people, forgetting at least for a while their political and geographic split.
Hamas seized Gaza from Abbas in 2007, leaving him only with the West Bank, where he heads of self-rule government in part of the territory. Since then, both sides have tightened their hold on their respective areas, on opposite sides of Israel, and reconciliation seems more distant than ever.
Assaf's victory had put the Islamic militants in a bind. Devout Muslims who support Hamas' fundamentalist brand of Islam oppose shows like "Arab Idol" as forbidden by their religion. And since seizing control of Gaza, Hamas has imposed stricter religious rules, including greater gender separation in public, on the already conservative territory.
However, Hamas is sensitive to public opinion and usually relents when it encounters widespread resistance. Earlier this year, for example, Hamas police shaved the heads of young men who sported gel-styled spiky hairstyles considered contrary to rules of modesty, but halted the campaign after an outcry.
In the case of Assaf, Hamas didn't want to be seen as going against the prevailing mood, but also did not want to endorse a frivolous form of entertainment, analysts said.
"Hamas knows there is huge energy behind (Assaf), and it will lose the street if it stands against him," said Mhaimar Abu Sada, a Gaza analyst.
In a compromise, the Hamas government dispatched a senior official in its Culture Ministry to be among those receiving the singer at the border crossing.
Assaf "proved that the Palestinian people are distinguished in all areas, despite the (Israeli) occupation and despite the aggression against Palestine," said the official, Fikri Judah.
However, Assaf will not perform in Gaza, instead traveling to the West Bank for a concert in Ramallah, the seat of Abbas' government, on July 4. From there, he heads to Dubai to continue his music career. He received a one-year contract from Platinum Records, the Dubai-based label owned by MBC, which broadcast the Arab Idol competition.
Abbas repeatedly injected himself into the "Arab Idol" craze since last month, when it became apparent Assaf had a shot at winning. He urged Palestinians to vote for the singer, praised him after his victory and named him an honorary ambassador.
On Tuesday, the pro-Abbas Palestine TV network broadcast the singer's chaotic homecoming live. When his black Mercedes pulled into Gaza, the crowd converged on the car, with enthusiastic fans climbing on top of it before being pulled back by Palestinian police.
"I love them, but things were not organized," Assaf said of his fans, speaking to Palestine TV. "There was a danger to my life."
Assaf said he could not go home because of the huge crowd in the Khan Younis refugee camp, where fans set up huge loudspeakers and young men danced to Assaf's music in the street.

Anti-terror police search Altaf Hussain’s UK house

LONDON: The Metropolitan Police’s Anti-Terrorism Command Unit concluded searches at two North West London addresses on Thursday afternoon, including a house which is owned by the MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

The police confirmed that it had concluded the searches after executing the “search warrants” at two houses on Tuesday morning. The searches were conducted on both houses for nearly 55 hours and it can be confirmed that more than two dozen members of the police, including forensic scientists and members of the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), took part in the high-profile operation.

According to land registry records, one of the houses is owned by Altaf Hussain. The house was bought by Altaf Hussain on March 8, 2001 at the price of £1,020,000, according to the land registry papers of the house that was searched.

Geo TV broadcast images on Thursday which showed a house being combed by the police in a London area — that’s the same house which is owned by Altaf Hussain, as shown on the registry papers.

The other house where a search warrant was executed is located at a short distance from Altaf Hussain’s house in Edgware. Searches at this house were concluded early. Police vans stood outside both houses throughout the search operation and members of the forensic teams, wearing gloves and forensic gear, were seen entering and leaving the property with material in bags and containers.

The involvement of the SOCA shows that while investigating the killing of Dr Imran Farooq, British authorities are also looking at the “money laundering” aspect and the net of the investigation involves more than what is widely known.

London-based Barrister Rashad Aslam told The News that police have to make an application for a warrant to the Justice of Peace in order to search a premises. He explained: “If police are satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for believing that an indictable offence has been committed and that there is material on premises which is likely to be of substantial value (whether by itself or together with other material) to the investigation of the offence; and that the material is likely to be relevant evidence, the Justice of Peace can issue a warrant authorising police to enter and search the premise in relation to each set of premises specified in the application.”

He said normally for each property a separate warrant is issued but it can be listed as one if the same person owns the properties. The owner of the house is informed about the raid on the spot, not in advance, and usually the officer in charge of the search shall communicate with the occupier, or any other person entitled to grant access to the premises, about the authority under which entry is sought and asks the occupier to allow entry.

But the police can enter the property without permission, as long as they have the warrant from the Justice of Peace, if there are reasonable grounds for believing that alerting the occupier or any other person entitled to grant access would frustrate the object of the search or endanger officers or other people.

Dr Imran Farooq was stabbed to death outside his home in Edgware, north London, in September 2010, when he was returning from work. His killing shocked Pakistan and Britain as the killing was executed in a highly professional style and has left the Metropolitan Police, one of the most professional investigating police forces in the world, with a lot of painstaking investigation.

Finding the killers is a challenge for the Met Police and they have repeated that they will not rest until the killers of the self-exiled Pakistani politician are found. Dr Farooq was a close colleague of Altaf Hussain and was amongst the party founders. The MQM has always maintained that the party wants Dr Farooq’s killers to be brought to justice.

The party has said that it will continue to cooperate with the police investigation. A £20,000 reward is available for information leading to the prosecution of Dr Farooq’s killers.

Altaf says nerve-racking events being executed against MQM

LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief, Altaf Hussain Tuesday urged party workers to continue maintaining unity among their ranks, saying it is time to exercise patience.

“Tragic events leading to extreme sorrow and grief for MQM leaders, workers and their family members were being orchestrated. But it is time to stay patient, as Allah Almighty helps those who continue to exercise patience,” Altaf Hussain while addressing a joint meeting of MQM Coordination committees in London and Pakistan.
He regretted that nerve-racking events were being executed both on national and international levels besides those aimed at causing fear and harassment among his associates. Such distressing steps had never been taken against any other party in foreign countries.
Altaf Hussain reiterated his party’s commitment to continue its peaceful and lawful struggle against any step based on injustice.
He urged the party workers that instead of falling prey to any sort of confusion or taking a decision on their own, they should consult the MQM Coordination Committee.

Coming soon: Zinda Bhaag

The term “revival of Pakistani cinema” is as clichéd as it is relevant for the survival of Pakistani industry, especially when independent-minded, young-blood filmmakers are facing off against an over-abundance of international releases, limited screens and a lack of marketing support. Although, a true revival did look bleak a few years back, today, the term is literally “owned” by people who may become this industry’s “new wave”.
Case in point: the people behind Zinda Bhaag, an indie drama with an overlaid layer of comedy whose theatrical trailer and hand-painted poster was unveiled at a ceremony in Cinepax, Karachi last week. The film, as it happens, will be released by Footprint Entertainment, whose chief imports include Hollywood blockbusters by Universal and Paramount (Battleship, Iron Man, Star Trek), and whose last Pakistani release was the horror film Siyaah.
Zinda Bhaag is the directorial debut of filmmakers Meenu and Farjad, and headlines Naseeruddin Shah with fashion model Amna Ilyas, Khurram Patras, Salman Ahmad Khan, Zohaib and Manzar Sehbai. The film features music by Sahir Ali Bagga, with playback by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Arif Lohar, Abrar ul Haq and Amanat Ali (the music used actual instruments, rather than midis and synths we were told).
While the songs were predominantly — and intentionally — missing at the theatrical trailer launch (it would be separate event, we were told), the film, from its first look, had a strange vibrancy to itself.
Focusing on lower middle class locals who dream of going abroad, Zinda Bhaag is shot digitally on Red Epics (and maybe a shot or two on Red One). The resulting, crisp on-screen presentation glowed with the look of “feature film” and not a telefilm (the cinematography is by Satya Rai Nagpaul, a cinematographer from India). Humour and drama went side by side — a few clips of kaleidoscopic background and intentionally badly choreographed dance moves, helped with the idiosyncratic attitude of the filmmakers. And Shah’s presence didn’t overrun the trailer or the film’s cast (even though he was the narrator of the trailer).
However, there is a small hiccup in the overall design of the film: the film’s chief language is Punjabi. The filmmakers insist that the film speaks Punjabi “slang”, and a few characters do speak Urdu, but for people in the metropolis (like me), who aren’t prone to decipher the language at a breakneck speed, Zinda Bhaag could prove to be a challenge when released Pakistan-wide.
The trailer was shown twice during the event, and Meenu, Farjad and producer Mazhar Zaidi were hospitable to even the most disdainful of questions during the post screening Q&A. At one point, someone from the audience questioned the logic of casting Naseeruddin Shah in the film, to which the filmmakers genially reminded them of the actor’s role in Khuda Kay Liye — supposedly the first of the “revivalists” — and that our singers are consistently staring in Bollywood albums.
Meenu, Farjad and Mazhar also pointed out that Shah even helped conduct a small acting class for the film’s actors to help them get into the role. The audition process of the remaining cast was a grueling experience, Mazhar points out, where the cast was short listed from over 500 people.
Also presented at the event was the hand painted poster art of the film by S. Iqbal, who is “Lollywood’s last remaining traditional poster artist”.
Still young in the release campaign, the film is set to release sometime in August — which I believe would be post the heavy rush of Eid releases.

PCB in turmoil after chairman's suspension

Umar Farooq
June 19, 2013
(Cricinfo.com)

he crisis in the PCB surrounding the suspension of Zaka Ashraf as chairman is having its deepest impact on the team's tour of the West Indies in the middle of July, starting with the memorandum of understanding between two boards and the selection of the team. It has also led to a delay in the PCB budget this year that, among other things, could affect salaries and player contracts.
The suspension of Ashraf has also led to an impasse in the board, with officials saying it is not possible for key decisions to be signed, be it the MoU with the WICB or the search for the home broadcasters. Ashraf's suspension is now being argued in the Islamabad High Court, which on Wednesday once again ordered the government to name an interim PCB chairman within three days and report on the next hearing on June 24.
In a third hearing of the judicial petition against the PCB's new constitution, the court decision left the board's major activities on hold. This uncertain status at the top could make its first dent at the ICC's annual meeting next week, as Pakistan along with other Full Members are due to give their response to the ICC guidelines about decreased government interference in cricket administration.
The PCB constitution allows its chairman near-absolute powers, making it almost a one-man show. Under the PCB constitution, the PCB chairman is also the chief executive officer and every major decision needs his approval - effectively giving the post of chief operating officer very limited powers.
The PCB was undecided about who will represent them at the conference, starting June 25. In 2011 the ICC had given a two-year deadline to the member boards to democratise their constitutions and remove government involvement in a bid to improve governance. Even though the ICC had relaxed its clause about the role of governments and the PCB tweaked its constitution slightly under Ashraf's chairmanship, the current situation is bound to raise concerns.
When Ashraf became the first incumbent elected president for another four-year term in May, it was the first such appointment under the new constitution. The IHC, however, ordered Ashraf's suspension, citing the election process "dubious" and "polluted".
The court, however, had not suspended the new constitution. The petition against the PCB was centred on the amendments made in it, especially those pertaining to the election of the chairman.
A government lawyer Irfanullah informed the IHC that former Pakistan captain Majid Khan was among three candidates for the role of acting chairman, and their names have already sent to the Prime Minister - who will make a final call. The commentator Chishty Mujahid and former chief of the Federal Board of Revenue Mumtaz Haider Rizvi are the other candidates.
The revised constitution also restructured the composition of the board of governors. The new 14-member body included five regional representatives selected on a rotation basis, five representatives of service organisations and departments, two non-voting former cricketers appointed on the recommendation of the chairman and two non-voting technocrats picked from a panel of three recommended by the chairman in consultation with the President of Pakistan. The term of each member was to be one year, but large regional associations like Lahore and Karachi along with Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan are keen to have a permanent role on the board.

Sethi aims to sort out PCB crisis

 Umar Farooq

The PCB's interim chairman Najam Sethi has outlined an ambitious plan of action, including trying to get the ICC to reconsider the ban on Mohammad Amir. His short-term target, he said, would be to sort out the internal dissensions that have riven the board.
Sethi will leave for London on Wednesday to attend the ICC's annual conference from June 25 to 29.
"He (Amir) is a talented cricketer," Sethi told a press conference in Lahore. "I will request the ICC that since as he has served two and a half years of his ban, and was also jailed, to reduce his ban."
Sethi took office today and was briefed about the crisis in the PCB surrounding the suspension of Zaka Ashraf as chairman, which was affecting the team's tour of the West Indies in July, and causing delays in the annual budget. He met the selection committee and was also briefed on the financial status of the board.
"I need some time to understand the problems," Sethi said. "It was my first meeting (with the selectors) and have told them that there will be no interference from my side in selection. But, I will definitely ask questions. If my questions are hard, they have to think about it. Meanwhile, they have been given the task of selecting the ODI and T20 teams for the West Indies tour."

The PCB has been under crisis over the last month when five top regional associations - Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad and Sialkot - revolted against Ashraf, alleging a fallacious electoral process. The five associations were dismissed by the PCB and not included in the board of governors. However, there was no representation in the board of governors from Punjab, Pakistan's largest province with 60% of country's population. The PCB instead tagged four regions - Larkana, Dera Murad Jamali, Peshawar and Islamabad in the board. The fifth was supposed to be Sialkot (part of Punjab), but since the region was disputed, it wasn't included in the board.
The dispute deepened when a writ petition was filed against the PCB's new constitution and the process of electing the chairman. The Islamabad High Court, in its first hearing, suspended Ashraf's incumbency and ordered an acting chairman to follow the PCB's day to day functioning.
"I need some time to understand the problems but the court did not suspend the constitution at all so things can move on," he said. "I am an acting chairman, and my responsibility is to resolve the problems, conduct fair and transparent elections."
Ashraf's top priority was to revive international cricket in Pakistan. However, Sethi said the chances of a revival are unrealistic unless the security situation improves in the country. "It is the matter of the national security establishment to enhance the security, but given the situation in the country, it is difficult. If terrorism continues in Pakistan, no matter how many speeches I make abroad…only if our house is in order will guests come."
Following Pakistan's poor showing in the Champions Trophy, Sethi promised accountability over any failings of the national team. Pakistan was the first team to exit the tournament after losing all three group games, to West Indies, South Africa and India.
"Although I was in charge when the team was selected for the Champions Trophy, I have asked for the report. I want to stress that in future, the captain, coach, vice-captain and the selection committee will be held accountable in case the team fails in any event."

Pakistani Batsmen Lacked Confidence at the Champions Trophy": Sohail Tanvir

by Saj Sadiq - Pakpassion.net (21st June 2013)

Pakistan’s horrendous performance at the Champions Trophy wasn’t just a huge disappointment for their fans, but also for some of the players who narrowly missed out on selection for the tournament. 28 year old seam bowler Sohail Tanvir was one of the players who was overlooked by the selectors for the tournament in England and Wales and speaking exclusively with PakPassion.net, Tanvir explained why he thought the Pakistani batsmen struggled for form at the Champions Trophy.

“It was very disappointing to see colleagues and team mates struggle during the Champions Trophy. I think we all had high expectations of the team going into the tournament particularly given Pakistan’s record in previous ICC tournaments and if the batsmen had provided the bowlers with some decent scores to defend around the 220 run mark, I’m sure the bowlers would have managed to defend those totals. Scores of 170 or so against the best teams in the world aren’t enough and it’s very rarely that you can defend such totals.”

“I think confidence amongst the Pakistani batsmen was low right at the start of the tour. Against Ireland, Pakistan struggled and only narrowly managed to win the two match series. The batsmen looked short of confidence in Ireland and I’m afraid that continued during the Champions Trophy. A rousing victory in Ireland would certainly have helped the Pakistani batsmen prepare for the Champions Trophy but that never materialised. The warm up match against South Africa was the highlight of the tour but unfortunately it proved to be a false dawn.”

Tanvir added “The batsmen should have taken a leaf out of Misbah-Ul-Haq’s book. He (Misbah) batted with responsibility and looked very solid in all conditions and against all of the bowling attacks Pakistan came up against. Unfortunately though the support, from some of the other batsmen was minimal and whilst confidence was low, there also seemed to be a number of the Pakistani batsmen struggling for form.”

Regarding his own international future Tanvir who last played for Pakistan in December last year in a Twenty20 international against India stated “Playing for Pakistan has always been my priority. Despite playing domestic cricket around the world for various teams, my aim has always been to play regularly for my country. I wasn’t selected for the Champions Trophy and that is a decision that the selectors made and one that I respect. Yes I was disappointed to miss out on selection for the Champions Trophy, but that is part and parcel of professional cricket. You have ups, you have downs and sometimes you have to take setbacks on the chin and get on with it and look ahead. “

“I’m here at Hampshire this season so that I can perform well for them and help the team achieve success and remind the Pakistani selectors that I am still around and knocking on the door of selection. I’ve made a good start and I’m looking forward to playing for Hampshire this season. I can only do my best, perform to the best of my ability and then it’s over to the selection committee to make the choices that they feel are in the best interests of Pakistan cricket.”

Tanvir has signed for Hampshire for all three formats this season and he feels that his stint at Hampshire could prove to be pivotal in his career as he looks to cement a place in Pakistan’s limited over teams.

“I’m honoured to be playing county cricket for Hampshire. Some of the Pakistani greats over the years like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis have played county cricket and improved as cricketers after their stints in county cricket. It’s not about coming over to England and just earning money, rather it’s more about the opportunity to learn and develop my cricketing skills. I spoke with Wasim Akram about the chance to play for Hampshire and he said grab it with both hands as it’s a fantastic opportunity. Wasim stated to me that you will definitely come back to Pakistan a better cricketer after a spell in county cricket. I feel that this spell at Hampshire is really crucial in my development as a cricketer and I want to ensure that I make the best of this opportunity.”

Sohail Tanvir was one of a number of pace bowlers that worked under the supervision of Wasim Akram at a bowling camp in Pakistan ahead of the Champions Trophy and commenting on his time working with the fast bowling legend, Tanvir stated that Akram’s advice for him was focused more on the mental side of the game and boosting his self belief and confidence.

“Wasim said to me that I have a lot of ability and that I am good enough to play international cricket. However what I needed to improve was my self-belief, confidence and my morale which had been affected after being in and out of the Pakistan side. Wasim was very positive about my future and he really helped me focus on the future and to regain my confidence. When one of the best bowlers of all time speaks highly of you, that is definitely going to help you and make you believe in yourself. I’m over here in England with my morale high and playing competitive cricket and looking forward to reclaiming a spot in the Pakistan side once again.”

Tanvir’s made an impressive start for Hampshire as he picked up 2 for 95 and scored 37 in a four day game against Gloucestershire and then on his Yorkshire Bank 40 over debut, he took 3 for 42 as Hampshire defeated Derbyshire by 46 runs.

Two Bollywood Movies Banned In Pakistan Cinemas

Raanjhana

Bollywood Movie Raanjhanaa which was scheduled to release today got banned in Pakistan.

The reason for the ban is the plot of the movie in which a Muslim girl marries a Hindu guy.

The title track of the movie was sung by Shiraz Uppal and the movie was expected to be released today in Pakistan.

The Second Movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ has been banned in Pakistan.
Starring Farhan Akhtar Khan!

The reason why Pakistan censor board banned it in Pakistan is the biased dialogue of Farhan Akhtar in the movie against his neighbouring country which says:
“Mujhse nahi hoga. Main Pakistan nahi jaonga”

Fawad Khan and Nida Khan to work together in Amar Bail

Fawad Khan, the dashing Zindagi Gulzar Hai guy has recently signed an upcoming drama
serial Amar Bail with actress Nida Khan.

Amar Bail is an exceptional novel written by Umera Ahmed and the drama serial will be probably based on it. The only delight for viewers in this drama serial would be the appearance of Fawad Khan because Nida Khan hasn’t done much serials or it could be said that she isn’t as popular as Fawad Khan. If you don’t remember Nida Khan, then let us remind you that she’s the one who played the role of daughter of Parsa in drama serial “Parsa”.
Fawad Khan will be playing the role of Umar and Nida Khan will appear as Aliza, the two main characters of the novel. We aren’t hearing much from the sources, however, it is expected that something related will soon show up on Umera Ahmed’s fan page.

Pakistani actress Jia Ali to make her Tamil debut

Jia Ali, the beautiful Pakistani actress, who rose to fame with her Lollywood debut ‘Deewanay Tere Pyar Kay’ said in an interview that she likes Tamil movies and is preparing to make a debut in Tamil film industry.

In her interview, she preferred Tamil movies on Bollywood ones. She said that she is inspired by Tamil language and the atmosphere of these movies. Tamil film industry is India’s biggest film industry where many Bollywood actresses started their career and now their enjoying high fame in Bollywood. Even some of the actresses turn from Bollywood to Tamil movies just because more than half of the India prefers these movies.
Now, it is Jia Ali’s chance to prove herself on big screen. She might face some challenges like learning new language and adjusting with new crew and environment there.

This is the reason why he has been featured in many local as well as international magazines.
This time, one of India’s top publications, ‘The Score Magazine’ interviewed Farhad Humayun. The interview talks about his upcoming projects and his on-going activities. He also discussed about the previous members of Overload and the current situation of Pakistan.

Farhan Saeed all set to launch his solo album

Farhan recently returned from India after completing some projects. Now, he’s back home for a video shoot and a big announcement is also expected from him. This is because we were hearing that Farhan’s solo album is in the pipeline and will be launched once the deals are done.
It is still not known under which sound label the album will be released. It would, perhaps, be some Bollywood label. Previously, “Pee Jaun” was released under the banner of Universal Music, which probably leads us to make the assumption that his album will be released by any Indian Music Label.
Now, if Farhan enters Bollywood as a solo singer, then he will actually enter the battle of musicians as hundreds of people in India strive for their music career. So, let’s wish Farhan best of luck for his upcoming solo album and wish that he makes his place among the top artists where musicians like Atif Aslam, Ali Zafar and Shiraz Uppal are enjoying their fame.

Comedian Nasheela is Dead, NOT Ainak Wala Jinn Shehzad Qaiser

A news story that is spreading like fire on online media, Ainak Wala Jinn passed away, has apparently turned suspicious after a Dawn News report suggest “Nasheela is dead” but doesn’t link it with Ainak wala jinn anywhere.
The original news story published first on ARY website also featured the picture of Nastoor Jinn aka Ainak Wala Jinn, which led us to believe he passed away. Little did they know, and we too, that he was NOT Nasheela and his name is actually Shehzad Qaiser. It could be a common reporting mistake, but the way ARY NEWS reporter connected it with Ainak Wala Jinn confirmed it even more.
Now after reading this Dawn News Report, it depicts that Nasheela was a Comedian and theatre actor who passed away last night and he had no connection with Ainak Wala Jinn or with its actors.
We feel sorry for posting an unaunthentic story here and consider ourselves equally responsible as the original publisher of it i.e ARYNEWS.TV
We further request all the readers to pass on this info. in order to remain save from any embarassment.

"I am sorry" : Asad Shafiq

Pakistan's young batsman, Asad Shafiq today apologised to the country's fans on arrival here after the side's disastrous outing in the ICC Champions Trophy in the United Kingdom.

"I am sorry," Shafiq, the first Pakistani player to return home after the national team's depressing showing, said at the Karachi international airport.

They struggled in a one-day series against minnows Ireland besides losing all their three group matches of the Champions Trophy.

Members and officials of the Pakistan team have decided to return in small groups after the angry reaction from fans and cricket community in the country.

Head coach, Dav Whatmore has been defiant in the face of strong criticism.

But Whatmore's excuses have done nothing to reduce the anger and frustration of the cricket fans even in the United Kingdom as fans there threw shoes and bottles at the players when they were boarding the team bus in Birmingham after the heavy defeat to India last Saturday.

Mohammad Irfan, Saeed Ajmal and Kamran Akmal are scheduled to return home early tomorrow morning from London.

Ironically, the situation in Pakistan cricket at the moment is also uncertain with the Islamabad High Court having suspended Zaka Ashraf from working as the PCB head.

The court has also ordered the ministry of inter provincial coordination to appoint an interim chairman to go and attend the ICC executive board meeting in London along with chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmed.

Misbah-ul-Haq in the top 10 of ODI batting rankings

(Courtesy of Pakpassion.net) The group stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 has resulted in a number of positive movements in the latest Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, which were released on Tuesday.

England pace bowler Steven Finn has now moved up a place to joint second with Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal. The bowlers’ table is still headed by West Indies’ Sunil Narine.

Also moving up are India left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja in fourth (up by three) and England pace bowler James Anderson in fifth (up by four). Also returning to the top ten is Sri Lanka's Nuwan Kulasekara in 10th (up by three).

New Zealand veteran Daniel Vettori has re-entered the rankings in 16th place.

Others moving in the right direction are Lasith Malinga in 11th (up by one), Kyle Mills in 12th (up by four), Kemar Roach in 18th (up by two), Rangana Herath in 24th (up by six), Shane Watson in 29th (up by two), Stuart Broad in 32nd (up by one), Ryan McLaren in 34th (up by 13) and Nathan McCullum in 38th (up by seven).

The highest wicket-taker of the tournament in the group stage with 11 wickets, New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan has jumped 15 places to 41st.

Meanwhile, England captain Alastair Cook has moved up two places to eighth in the latest Reliance ICC Rankings for ODI batsmen. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has jumped seven places to return to the top 10 and is now at 10th after scoring 173 runs from three matches.

Also moving in the right direction inside the top 20 are Suresh Raina in 14th (up by one), George Bailey in 17th (up by six) and Ian Bell in 18th (up by three).

Outside the top 20, the batsmen moving up are Kane Williamson in 21st (up by nine), Mahela Jayawardene in 24th (up by three), Chris Gayle in 34th (up by two), Joe Root in 35th (up by seven), Nasir Jamshaid in 38th (up by eight), Faf du Plessis in 43rd (up by seven) and Rohit Sharma in 47th (up by 11).

The highest run-getter of the tournament until the end of the group stage, Shikhar Dhawan, has re-entered the batting rankings in 50th place. Dhawan has scored 264 runs so far in the tournament, with two back-to-back hundreds.

The batting table is still topped by South Africa captain AB de Villiers, with teammate Hashim Amla in second place and India's Virat Kohli in third place.

The player rankings will next be updated on Monday, 24 June, a day after the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

India consolidates top position on the Reliance ICC ODI Championship table

Meanwhile, India’s unbeaten run in the group stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 has helped it strengthen its position as the number-one ranked team on the Reliance ICC ODI Championship Table.

India had entered the tournament on 119 ratings points and has moved to 121 thanks to its victories over South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan.

England is now ranked second after moving up two places from fourth, thereby pushing Australia to third position.

Second-ranked England and third-placed Australia are level on 113 ratings points, but Alastair Cook’s side is ranked above Michael Clarke’s team by a fraction of a point.

South Africa has dropped a place to fourth with a loss of one ratings points to 112 following the completion of the group stage. Sri Lanka at fifth and Pakistan at sixth have retained their pre-tournament positions.

There is a close tussle between New Zealand and West Indies for seventh place on the table. Currently, New Zealand and West Indies are level on 88 ratings points, but Brendon McCullum’s side is ranked above Dwayne Bravo’s team by a fraction of a point.
